Sponsored by the United States Department of Education, Closed Caption Latina has been working on the project Technology and Media Services for Individuals with Disabilities – Television Access over the past 18 months. Our main objective in this project is to provide closed captioning and video description for educational programs that can be used in the classroom. During our involvement with this project, Closed Caption Latina has generated closed captioning and video descriptions for over 750 hours of educational programming. The television channel HITN –Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network, broadcasts these programs.
In an effort to inform the public about the benefits of closed captioning and video description, Closed Caption Latina has also provided written and audio-visual information about closed captioning and video description programs to schools and other organizations within the United States that are serving people with disabilities. One of the main tools we use to disseminate this information is a newsletter. With this newsletter we share our activities and experiences in the development of the project, including the experiences of individual contributors such as the video describers and other members of our advisory group working on the project.
The articles in this newsletter were written by two of our video describers. In the first, Olga Lucía Collazos writes about her interview with Tamara Rorie, a successful lawyer who was born blind. In this interview Tamara shared her experiences as a professional and an entrepreneur. In the second article, Alfonso Flores responded to some questions he is asked about video description.
